I was listening to David Jeremiah’s message on his website today where he was teaching about Samson.  In Samson’s time, the nation of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and they were put under their enemies by cultural and spiritual seduction.  The Angel of the Lord told Samson’s parents that the Lord would use Samson as a deliverer, even though the people were not crying out for one.  They apparently did not sense their need for deliverance.  This American nation has been slowly seduced spiritually and culturally.  In large part, they do not see their need for deliverance.

Most Americans look for cultural and economic salvation rather than spiritual and moral salvation found in Jesus Christ.  America has become blind to the fact that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.  The nation’s cultural and economic salvation ought to come only as a benefit of right living.

I am not surprised that for many months, America has considered one politician who is on the extreme left of the political right, and two Marxists who are on the extreme left of the left.  Each of those supposed saviors have a mindset and practice of supplanting the teaching of Almighty God regarding the answer to the ills of our nation.  They show that they believe government is the means to the end of our salvation.  Government administered to the wrong ends becomes merely a work of man’s hands, a dumb idol that cannot save.

Jesus Christ is our only Savior both temporally and spiritually.  He has instituted government of men to be ministers of God for our good, not for evil.  In John Locke’s words, “Because men are corrupt, vicious, and degenerate,... (we have need of government).”  Murder, sexual immorality, idolatry, sorcery, and subversion of family integrity are today often government-licensed or government-sponsored.  Our society at large then either tolerates or celebrates those evils.

Again - this American nation has been slowly seduced culturally and spiritually.  We are at the point where conforming to the societal norm, even if nominally conservative, places us in opposition to the policy of Almighty God.

I cringed as I read about Samson, knowing his complacency led him to blindness and bondage.  I now cringe over where I see our complacency taking the church and the nation.  I hope that even in our blindness, we can free ourselves from bondage short of our self-destruction.
